The leg press lets you train the legs heavy while your back stays fully supported, which is why so many lifters lean on it. Seated in the machine, you drive a loaded platform away with your feet and let it come back under control, working the quads, glutes, and hamstrings together while the pad braces your spine and takes balance out of the equation. That supported setup is its real advantage: beginners and anyone wary of loading their back can push meaningful weight without the technical demands of a squat, and the plate stack adjusts in easy increments for precise progression. It's not a free pass, though — bouncing out of a too-deep bottom or letting your knees cave inward can strain the knees or lower back, so control the depth and track your knees over your toes. Think of it as the squat's more forgiving cousin: a little less full-body carryover in exchange for the ability to overload the legs safely and simply.
