The Bulgarian split squat is a single-leg squat with your rear foot propped up on a bench behind you, and it punches well above its modest loads. With one leg doing almost all the work, it drives the quads, glutes, and hamstrings of the front leg through a deep range while your whole body fights to stay balanced on that narrow base. Training one side at a time is its real strength: it exposes and evens out the left-to-right differences a two-legged squat can hide, and it builds serious single-leg stability that carries over to running, sport, and everyday movement. Because balance is part of the challenge, you don't need heavy weight to make it hard — a pair of light dumbbells goes a long way. Keep your front shin honest and lower under control; sloppy form can nag the knee or lower back, and if balancing is tough at first, hold a rack or wall for a fingertip of support. It's one of the best bang-for-buck leg builders going.
