The leg extension is the most direct way to train the quadriceps in isolation. Seated in the machine, you extend your knees against a padded lever, loading the front of the thigh with almost no help from any other muscle — the opposite of a squat, where a dozen muscles share the work. That focus is the point: it lets you hammer the quads on their own and build strength around the knee joint, and because it's a stack of plates, you can dial the resistance up in small, precise increments to keep progressing. It's a friendly, low-skill movement, which makes it a common finisher after the heavy compound lifts have done the structural work. The one caveat is that loading the knee at full lockout can bother sensitive joints, so if your knees are cranky, keep the weight honest and avoid snapping into the top. Used sensibly, it's a reliable accessory for adding quad size and detail that a squat alone won't fully bring out.
