Lying Leg Curl
- Muscles worked
- Hamstrings
- Equipment
- Machine
The lying leg curl is a machine isolation that trains the hamstrings and nothing much else. Lying face down, you bend your knees to pull a padded lever toward your glutes and lower it under control, working the hamstrings directly through knee flexion — the one job the big hinge lifts like deadlifts and Romanian deadlifts don't fully cover, since those load the hamstrings mainly at the hip. That makes it a valuable complement rather than a competitor: it fills in knee-flexion strength, helps build balanced hamstrings, and strengthens the muscles that support and protect the knee. Because it's a plate stack, the resistance adjusts in easy, precise increments, and the low skill requirement makes it beginner-friendly. The main caution is simple — rushing the reps or arching your back off the pad to yank the weight up takes the work off the hamstrings and can strain them. Keep your hips down, control the lowering, and let the hamstrings do the pulling. As a targeted hamstring builder, it's a dependable accessory.
