The dumbbell curl is the most versatile way to train the biceps, working each arm on its own with a dumbbell in each hand. You bend at the elbow to raise the weight, and because the arms move independently, each biceps has to drive its own rep — which evens out the strength differences between left and right that a barbell can quietly paper over. It needs nothing more than a pair of dumbbells, so you can do it almost anywhere, and it builds the kind of everyday arm strength that carries into every other pull. It also gives you freedom a fixed bar doesn't: you can curl both arms together, alternate them, or rotate your wrists as you lift. The usual mistakes are loose wrists that get strained under load and using body English to swing the weights up instead of curling them. Keep your wrists firm, your elbows still, and let the biceps do the lifting. As a simple, adaptable arm builder, it's a permanent staple.
