The pull-up is the classic test of upper-body pulling strength: you hang from a bar with an overhand grip and pull your chest up toward it using nothing but your bodyweight. The lats drive the movement, the biceps and rear shoulders assist, and your grip is challenged the entire time — so a single strict rep trains your back, arms, and hands all at once. It needs almost nothing, just a bar to hang from, which is part of its appeal: it's the rare serious back exercise you can do at home or in any gym. The honest downside is that a clean rep is flat-out hard for many beginners, and swinging or kipping to force reps trades the muscle-building tension for momentum and can strain the shoulders. Start from a full hang, pull until your chin clears the bar, and lower with control; if you can't yet, the lat pulldown and assisted variations build you toward it. Few movements give back as much strength and size for how little equipment they ask.
