The barbell overhead press is the standard for building real overhead strength. Standing or seated, you press a barbell from the front of your shoulders to a locked-out position above your head, making the deltoids the prime movers while the triceps finish the rep and the core braces hard to keep you from leaning back. Because both hands share one bar, you can load it heavier than most shoulder work, which is why it's the reference lift people use to track pressing progress and the movement that carries over to almost everything you push overhead. Pressed standing, it doubles as a full-body bracing test; seated, it lets you isolate the shoulders with more support. The honest cautions: careless technique — flaring, over-arching, or pressing with cranky shoulders — can aggravate the joint, and going truly heavy is tricky without a spotter or rack to bail into. Keep the bar path tight over your midline and your ribs down. For raw pressing strength and broader shoulders, nothing replaces it.
