The barbell hip thrust is the most direct way to load the glutes heavy. With your upper back braced against a bench and a loaded barbell across your hips, you drive the weight up by extending your hips until your body forms a tabletop, then lower under control — a movement where the glutes are unmistakably the prime mover, with the hamstrings and core assisting. Its big advantage is that it puts heavy, targeted tension right where you want it and keeps scaling as you get stronger, so it grows with you from a light bar to serious plates. That makes it the anchor of most glute-focused training. The costs are practical: you need a bench and a loaded barbell to set it up, the position feels awkward until you've done it a few times, and sloppy form — over-arching the lower back or shooting the hips up unevenly — can strain the spine. Tuck your ribs, keep your chin down, and squeeze at the top rather than hyperextending. For building glute strength and size, it's the reference lift.
