The dumbbell lateral raise is the go-to isolation move for building wider shoulders. Holding a dumbbell in each hand, you lift your arms out to the sides in a smooth arc until they reach shoulder height, singling out the lateral head of the deltoid — the muscle on the outside of the shoulder that creates the capped, broad look pressing alone won't fully develop. Because it targets a spot the big overhead lifts under-train, it's a near-universal accessory, and it needs almost nothing: a light pair of dumbbells and a bit of space, anywhere. It also helps open up and control shoulder movement, which pays off in your heavier pressing. Two things make or break it: careless, swinging form can tweak the shoulder, and because the side delt responds to volume more than raw load, progress stalls unless you keep nudging the weight or reps up over time. Lead with your elbows, stay controlled, and leave your ego at the rack — this is a movement you feel, not one you heave.
