The incline dumbbell bench press tilts the bench up so the press travels toward the upper chest and the front of the shoulders — the region a flat bench tends to under-work. Using dumbbells instead of a bar lets each arm move on its own path, so you get a deeper stretch at the bottom and a longer range of motion than a fixed barbell allows. That combination makes it a favourite for anyone trying to build the upper-chest shelf that fills out a shirt, and it's a common accessory alongside heavier flat pressing. Because each side has to stabilise its own weight, the exercise also exposes and evens out strength differences between your left and right sides — something a barbell can quietly hide. It works well across rep ranges, from moderate loads for size to lighter, controlled sets when your shoulders need a gentler day. If your upper chest lags behind the rest of your pecs, this is one of the most direct ways to bring it up while giving the shoulders and triceps some secondary work.
